The monolithic block of the "Science Building" stands at the tip of the Polygone Scientifique peninsula. The building is intended to exemplify cutting-edge technology in the field of research into soft matter and materials under extreme conditions and, as it were, watches over the entire site. It combines areas for scientific research, reception areas and offices in a complex arrangement. The architectural challenge consisted of creating a homogenous ensemble, despite the numerous functional specifications that influence function, form and dimensions in equal measure. Functionally and architecturally, the building creates a connection between the ILL5 neutron reactor and the ESRF electron storage ring. Formally, the building develops from a simple cuboid that is kept in motion both day and night by the interplay between masses and facade penetrations. As an exemplary, modern research institute, the building is intended to represent the building culture of our era through its innovative and forward-looking character. This goal was realised primarily through the special façade design. It consists of light-coloured, perforated metal strips arranged regularly on the façade at floor level. During the day, these elements act as balustrades in front of opaque surfaces and as solar shading in front of window surfaces. At night, they make the Science Building appear to be bathed in white light and lend it a calm and pure appearance.
